Toy Piano Composers presents 'We Started a Band'
We Started a Band is the debut performance of the new Toy Piano Composers (TPC) Ensemble, featuring some of Toronto's best emerging chamber musicians. The six-member ensemble was formed to perform works by composers of the Toy Piano Composers collective, and includes Katherine Watson, flute; Anthony Thompson, clarinet; Daniel Morphy, percussion; Wesley Shen, piano; Sharon Lee, violin; and Adam Scime, double bass.
Six new works have been written for members of the TPC Ensemble by composers of the TPC collective. Chris Thornborrow's dreamscape Before she woke up plays with the idea of concerto in a chamber setting. Monica Pearce's passive agressive-defensive-contempt-stonewalling attempts to describe four destructive emotional concepts through musical manipulation in an archetypal four-movement structure. Other works will include Daniel Brophy's Sonata for Satan for chamber group and electronics, and Ruth Guechtal's Noise Fugue. Works by Christian Floisand and Fiona Ryan round out he program, that will play with classical forms in new and surprising ways.
